A trip to Amritsar: Sikhism’s holiest shrine

Wagah Border

Jallian Wala Bagh

On 13 April 1919, numerous pilgrims gathered in Jallian Wala Bagh, Amritsar, to celebrate the Baisakhi festival. This place is enclosed by high walls on all sides and features only a narrow passageway for admittance. On the same day General Dyer personally with his troops led to the sight and ordered his flock to open fire without any forewarning which resulted in demise of 379 and injured over 1200 innocent civilians.

Ram Bagh

This sight is name after Guru Ram Das, the founder of the city, as a token a tribute. It features a museum in the summer palace constructed by the Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839), known as the Lion of Punjab. The museum encloses weapons and arms dating back to Mughal era and replica of the ´Kohinoor´ diamond.
